I’ve been fascinated with crime since my teens. I’m pretty sure it began with my grandad; no he wasn’t a criminal, but he loved watching crime shows and since I lived with my grandparents, I naturally began watching them with him. We’d watch CSI together every week and I’d imagine being a forensic scientist when I grew up. Obviously that didn’t happen as I’m shit at science.
I’m always drawn to a crime thriller, I love crime fiction, be it books, films or TV shows, and I have a weird fascination with serial killers. I clearly remember the first crime fiction novel I read, it was Ben Elton’s Past Mortem. As soon as I finished it, I passed it on to my grandad so we could discuss it. We both enjoyed it and it spurred my love of all things crime.
If you’re reading this and thinking I’m some sort of criminal in the making, don’t worry, I have no intentions of going on a spree.
Yet. (Kidding, don’t arrest me!)
Crime is something so removed from my life, it’s something I never really experienced growing up. Nothing ever happened where I lived, my family never got into trouble, and I was genuinely fearful of the police. I was a good kid (am a good adult) because the thought of jail terrified me.
So, I suppose my interest in crime, and more so serial killers is in regards to the psychology behind why they do it, and not the actual crime itself. I’m not really into blood and guts, I’m much more of a thinker when it comes to these things. Like, yes, *insert famous serial killer here* killed so many people (and as awful as that is), why did they do it? What happened to make them take someones life? What triggered this behaviour?
I’ve spoken to a lot of people who are also fascinated by serial killers, so if you think I’m a lone strangeling, think again. And for the record, since everyone I talk to about this asks me, my favourite (is that the right word?) serial killer is Jack the Ripper. Mainly because he was a massive name in the late-Victorian era, but ultimately because he was never caught.
Finally, I thought I’d share some of my favourite fictional crime entertainments.

Crime is definitely an interesting area, I do prefer crime TV over crime books though. I think it's because I can never really get into the mystery when it's a book – maybe I just need to read better crime books.
I think I have read one by Michael Robotham though, and I think I enjoyed it, it's just slipping my mind which one it actually was. Definitely part of the Joe O'Loughlin series though.
I do love Sherlock, the books and the TV show (also the American remake Elementary, that's also pretty good too).
Dexter was good, but went down hill in the last few seasons and the ending was just tragic…
